From Kimberley to Cape Town's Clubs

Thuli sits down to talk code switching between Tswana, English and Afrikaans

Following her upbringing in the North West province of South Africa, Thuli moved to Kimberley, located in the Northern Cape province, where she lived for 12 years before moving to Cape Town in 2015. Currently completing her tertiary studies and working in the Cape Town events and nightlife industry, Thuli sat down to discuss and unpack how she tends to code switch between accents and dialects of Tswana, Afrikaans and English in everyday life.

Chalking it up to the different spaces and people she finds herself surrounded by, Thuli reflects on her past and current influences of her linguistic and personal journey.

Code switching, for us, happens a lot because sometimes there are just words in Afrikaans, and there's no other way to say it.
It's like Afrikaans and English and Tswana together. It's actually crazy [...] That's the most mind-blowing code-switching in South Africa. It's crazy how many people will come there [Kimberley] and be consumed by the language and totally adapt to it.
